I have had a Sony SR11 for several months, and recently upgraded my computer to a Q6600 QuadCore system running Vista 64-bit.
I now have the hardware to edit my files, but I'm having a tough time identifying software that is able to work well with the AVCHD files, and is also Vista 64-bit compatible. I do not need/want the Pro version at $550 or so, and was hoping to use the new Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack, but found some comments at Amazon indicating that this is not compatible with 64-bit Vista. So - is anybody here using Sony Movie Studio 9 Platinum Pro Pack on a Vista 64-bit system, to edit AVCHD files? It is my understanding that Pinnacle Studio 12 is compatible with 64-bit Vista, but it isn't clear if it's as good at working with AVCHD files as the Sony product. Any information appreciated.

I'm new here, but I have the same setup as you.
sr11, vegas platinum pro 9, q6600, 5GB Ram, Vista 64-bit. Haven't run into any problems yet, but I don't know if I'm taking full advantage of the system. I made a 30min bowling compilation with music and burned it to dvd in a short amount of time. Also rendered? to bluray and burned it onto a dvd and played it on my PS3. Brian

A review at Amazon quoted Sony Support stating that the only version that was supported in 64-bit Vista was the Pro Version, which is what had me worried. I was hoping it was at least compatible, although I realized it likely wouldn't take advantage of the 64-bit OS. Was there anything unusual that was required, or that occurred during the install? Also, I thought I read somewhere that it requires QuickTime to be present on the system. Can you confirm or refute that? Any other quirks or unexpected behavior, or does it just seem to be working like any other application? Thanks!

Nothing unusual required or occured. Everything installed like normal. I can't comment on the quicktime, as I already had it installed for my iPod. I haven't fully explored the app, but in the sr11 software (PMB) I can't see any previews (maybe a 64-bit thing?) Hope that helps, like I said I'm a newb to video but I'm a total gotta find out how everything works freak. Brian

(I don't use it anymore for reasons unrelated to compatibilty). I hadn't seen anything that says PMB is incompatible with Vista 64, maybe I just missed it. I know they say it isn't 'supported' but maybe they mean that they won't provide technical support if you use it on Vista 64.

I know what you mean about official support, vs real-world compatibility, but I came across several threads that suggested significant compatibility issues: http://forums.dpreview.com/forums/re..ssage=27375336 https://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=926253 For at least one guy at DPReview, installing PMB on 64-bit Vista reportedly created system-wide problems and difficulty booting. Whether or not this is user error, this certainly can get one's attention. Thanks again.

Why not download the free trial and see how it works and if you like it?
I did that with a few editing programs, and I like Vegas Movie Studio 9 the best, plus Amazon has it on sale with a $30 rebate right now making the final cost only $69. It's a great program, rock solid stable, a bit of a learning curve compared to the others, but I think that's because it can do more. Ulead wouldn't run properly, and Cyberlink Powerdirector crashed my system a lot, and after only 4 days into my trial, it stopped working saying my trial expired. My system is running windows XP, so I can't comment on the 64bit Vista.

I have a brand-new computer, and would like to keep it as 'clean' as possible. Installing/uninstalling apps often leaves a certain amount of 'debris' and with VideoApps I'm particularly concerned about conflicting codecs from different apps, etc. I'd like to be able to use the Sony app, as I think it would likely work best with the AVCHD files from my Sony camcorder, since they're from the same manufacturer. And XP is quite a bit different from 64-bit Vista, so while I'm glad it's working well for you, it doesn't really tell me one way or the other about how it would work on my system. Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b Build 924Thanks for the comment.

I just received this response from Sony Creative Software Customer Service & Technical Support.
'This is definitely something we are looking into, however, we do not have a timeframe for being able to make the software fully 64 bit OS compatible. The 32 bit applications have been tested on a 64 bit OS, and in most cases, operated as intended. This is an unsupported operation, however, since the 32 bit applications were not authored to be compatible in a 64 bit OS.'

Just to update this post: right now as of Jan 2009 Sony's Picture Motion Browser (PMB) is now supported with the Windows Vista 64 bit OS.I have a Sony SR-1 and I had to first install the PMB version 1.1 from the CD that came with my camcorder. Version 1.1 is not compatible with Vista 64bit but it does install with some minor popup messages. I did not try to run it to test to see if it would work. After 1.1 installed I went to the Sony support site and downloaded the PMB update to version 3.3.00 which IS compatible with Vista 64. The file is called SPU30_Upgrade0810a.exe. However the 3.3.00 update will not install unless you have at least version 3.0.00 so I had to find that on the Sony support site and upgrade first from 1.1 to 3.0.05 and then from 3.0.05 to 3.3.00. btw, I couldn't find the upgrade to 3.0.05 until I looked until the support files for 32bit Vista. The file is called SPU_Upgrade0805a.exe and will update any version of PMB prior to 3.0.05. now 3.3.00 works great on Vista 64 bit. The links I used were: For 1.1 to 3.0.05: esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=HDRSR1&upd_id=3529&os_id=27 For 3.0.05 to 3.3.00: esupport.sony.com/CA/perl/swu-download.pl?mdl=HDRSR1&upd_id=4026&os_id=36 Quote:

Many thanks for this, saurusmonster. Your post is very timely. I've been continuing to monitor this situation, and have been using the trial version of Sony Vegas Movie Studio 9.0b Platinum and DVD Architect 4.5 Studio for the last several weeks. I've come to really like them, and have done some real work with them. Regarding PMB: there are posts on Sony's support forums where PMB 3.0.00 altered system files enough so that people couldn't reboot their 64-bit computers into windows at all! Safe mode boot, and other steps had to be taken to remedy the situation. This obviously made me reluctant to even try it! I previously found the link to 3.3.00, compatible with 64-bit Vista, and was chagrinned, even outraged, to see it required the presence of 3.0.00, which isn't compatible, in order to install. Talk about Catch 22! Sony Support was of no help, and I have a letter into corporate complaining about this, and the need for a stand-alone 3.3.00! I know of at least one other person who did as you did - installed the 'incompatible' version, and then did the upgrade before running PMB or rebooting the system. That apparently worked, as it did for you, so I may have to go that direction. I want PMB for 2 functions: --the ability to author, with menus, AVCHD discs on plain DVD-R media. Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b Build 92 5--the ability to edit the files from my SR11, render the result as AVCHD, and then transfer those files back to the camera, where they can be played normally. Can you confirm that PMB enables both of these functions? Finally, there is apparently a bug, which appears almost universal, in that Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0b completely crashes when rendering full resolution .m2ts or .mp4 files at 1920x1080-60i/Dolby 5.1. I have definitely found this to be the case the majority of the time, as have virtually everybody else I've contacted about this. What has been your experience in this regard? Going with Vegas Pro 8.1, which apparently renders these without difficulty, and also has the ability to actually take advantage of 64-bit Vista, is tempting! But the cheapest price, at $399 is still pretty steep! I don't mind paying more for a pro version, but 4x the price of the Movie Studio version is tough to swallow! Thanks again!

To update this thread as it may be relevant in choosing which version, 32bit v 64 bit, of Windows 7 to use. Sony's site states which products are 64bit compatible:

I am about to build a Win-7 based 64-bit machine and your post about Vista 64-Bit was very helpful in heading me in the right direction.
Turns out that I'll need to upgrade from Movie Studio 8d to 9x in order to run on Win 7. I'd post a URL to the Sony Answer ID# 4565 but dn't have enough posts evidently. Thanks Todd7.

Hi.I am almost as green to video editing as you can get, so please bear with me. I am having problems with the rendering process using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum- Version 9.0b (Build 92). The problem I encounter is the render process stops suddenly at different stages of the render process (sometimes as low as 2%, sometimes around 20% done, sometimes 50%, sometimes as much as 90% done). The elapsed time and estimated time keep counting, but the preview either freezes or turns black and I have let the process continue until the estimated time reaches zero and then the elapsed time keeps going (have let it go to 70 minutes when it should have taken 9 minutes based on the estimated time). I even let the system run for 24 hours once it had frozen and the status did not change, so I think I can safely say that the program is freezing. It does not crash, but I do have to close it using task manager as it is unresponsive. The program is on a box running Windows Vista Home Premium, with a AMD Phenom II X4 Processor, 3.00GHz, with 8 Gig of Ram. I did read in some other forums that Vista may be an issue, so I did install the software on another machine which is running XP Media Center Edition (SP3), with an AMD Athlon 7750 Dual Core Processor, 2.71 GHz with 2.75 Gig of ram. (sorry for the double install Sony!). The same problem with rendering happened with that machine, so I went back to the Vista machine for the rest of my fixes, which were (if I can remember all I have tried!): 1) Edited some of the .dll's and executable to allow for > 2 gig of ram to be used. 2) Freed up system resources by running MSCONFIG and disabling everything in the start menu and all non-MS services apps in the 'Services' section. 3) Tried breaking the project (about 35 minutes long with a few plug-in's like Sony transitions, simple fades) into 3 smaller pieces. One of these was able to finish the render process, but the other 2 I could never get to finish rendering. I can also add that the one piece that did render out, I watched and it did not have any audio. Not sure what happened to not have the audio there, but did read where the audio does not get re-rendered to save time, so maybe that is it for the audio (remember, I am a greenhorn and NLE!). 4) I tried rendering to different file types such as avi and mov and they too froze. 5) I tried rendering to a different hard disk drive than the parent material exists on. It froze. 6) I did read some issues with CPU overheating, so I opened up the computer case and blew air into it while rendering and it froze. The CPU has it’s own fan and that fan did run as well. The video sources are actually a VOB format. I have a Panasonic PV-GS200 that the DV port does not work on. So I have to transfer the video from the camera to a stand alone HD/DVD recorder (the type you use with TV). It gets saved to the hard drive in the machine first, then burned to a DVD and then I import the video into Vegas from the burned DVD. I did watch the system resources during the failed renders and the CPU was at around 85-95% almost the entire time, with moments when it is up at 98-100% so not sure if that is an issue or not. Sorry to be so long winded, but I figured best to give you all as much info as I could to try and find a solution. Thanks! -John PS- I would even appreciate such advise like “sounds like you are out of luck”, or “try Sony Tech Support” as I am pretty much at my end of the rope with this problem, but wanted to try a forum such as this before ponying up to Sony.
A cut-down version of a premium video editing suite, Sony Movie Studio HD 11 brings you an accessible and efficient video editing environment. It handles as many as ten video tracks, supports up to 1080p/60fps, and offers a rich library of transitions and effects. DVD and Blu-ray authoring is unfortunately omitted and will require additional software.
Pros
Efficient editing environment: Sony Movie Studio HD 11 features a friendly NLE environment where clips can be easily and quickly assembled to a good overall result. The essential editing functions of the more expensive platinum version are retained without omissions.
Accessible to amateurs: Contains all the bare-bones essentials any amateur would need to start with NLE software. By putting limitations on features, Sony has created a package that is ideal for first-time NLE users.
Cons
Absence of DVD and Blu-ray authoring: Compared to the platinum version there is no 3D editing, surround-sound mixing, or XDCAM support. If these omissions are not worrisome, we think that the omission of DVD and Blu-ray authoring is something that is really lacking here. The type of users targeted by Movie Studio 11 are casual users that clearly look for a single do-it-all solution.
Somewhat outdated: The main reservation we have about version 11 is that it is now three-years-old. Sony has moved on to version 13, which introduces new features and support for more recent hardware and file types.
Bottom Line
While powerful, Sony Movie Studio HD 11 has been superseded by version 13. We suggest that you turn your attention to Sony's Movie Studio Platinum 13, whose modern hardware support and richer feature set make it more appealing.

What is a Crack?
The word 'crack' in this context means the action of removing the copy protection from commercial software. A crack is a set of instructions or patch used to remove copy protection from a piece of software or to unlock features from a demo or time-limited trial. There are crack groups who work together in order to crack software, games, etc. If you search for Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0b Crack, you will often see the word 'crack' amongst the results which means it is the full version of the product.
What is a Serial?
The word 'serial' means a unique number which identifies the license of the software as being valid. All retail software uses a serial number or key of some form. The installation often requires the user to enter a valid serial number to proceed. A serial can also be referred to as a 'CD Key'. When you search for Sony Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 8.0b Serial for example, you may find the word 'serial' amongst the results. This usually means your software download includes a serial number of some sort.
What is a Keygen?
